This Review is Dedicated To Roxy

The inspiration behind the Paw Elementary Series comes from Author, Katie Melko’s first fur baby, Roxy. She was alongside Katie through ten years of schooling, a marriage, and three different moves.

“I was so fortunate to have her in my life for 12 years before cancer took her from me. She is the main character in my children’s books, and I hope you love her as much as I always will.” – Katie Melko

Being a fur mom, I know how much our pets mean to us. They are our children, our loves, and they are always there for us. Thank you, Katie, for sharing your love for Roxy with us. I hope that she continues to bring as much happiness as she did to you to all of your readers.

“A dog is the only thing on Earth that loves you more than you love yourself” – unknown

It is not unusual for children to be afraid of the dentist, in fact, most adults are also scared of the dentist too! What we sometimes fail to realize is that our own insecurities of going to the dentist are passed on to our little ones without us even knowing. Children pick up on our hesitancies and as well as have a fear of the unknown, which is very common. Our job as parents is to help our children face their anxiety and concerns and help them overcome that initial unknown! A great way to combat your children’s anxiety about the unknown is to read a great story!

Paw Elementary: Roxy’s Adventure to the School Dentist By Katie Melko is a perfect story to help your little one combat those nasty fears. In this book, Roxy has a dental clinic day at school. Roxy is scared of going to see the dentist because she does not know what to expect. In this book, we follow Roxy through her journey as she talks to family and friends about her dental visit and how she overcomes her fear of the dentist.

This book is very detailed, so it’s excellent for first-time dentist patients and for children who have a lot of questions about what their first dental visit will involve. I like that this book teaches its readers on the process of visiting the dentist from start to finish and covers all the basics of a dental visit from the first time Roxy sits in her dental chair to the X-rays she gets to review at the end. The author even goes into detail about how to properly care for teeth and how frequently you should visit the dentist. This book will help you and your child develop the proper vocabulary and background knowledge for your first dentist visit and will help your little ones ease their worries!

Rapid Fire with Katie Melko

Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Katie: I fell in love with writing when I was in my Master’s Degree Program a couple years ago. I find writing very therapeutic, and it allows me to get in touch with my creative side.

Q. What does your family think of your writing?

Katie: My family has been very supportive of my writing career thus far. My husband especially has been amazing, always understanding and encouraging me to continue to create my books.

Q. Describe what your ideal writing space looks like?

Katie: Funny enough, I love to write in the bath or cozy with blankets at home. If that isn’t working, I love to visit my local coffee shop and get lost in the corner writing.

Q. Tell us about your plans for the future? Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Katie: In five years, I hope to have a great series built for Paw Elementary on many facets of life that can help children go through childhood feeling more confident, happy and reduced fear. I hope to have my books romance/ children to be picked up by a professional publishing house. I would love to be a full-time writer in five years and be able to give back a % of my sales to a charity for animals.

Q. How did you become involved in the subject or theme of your book?

Katie: I’ve been a dental hygienist for 10 years. This career gave me the inspiration to reach out to try and help children by reducing their fears with a fun AND educational book. Working in public health, I would treat children at schools and saw every day, just how scared children were to get their teeth cleaned.

Q. What type of books do you write?

Katie: I currently write children books and just finished writing my first romance novel.

Q. What do you love most about being an Author?

Katie: I love being able to talk about creative writing and being seen as something else other than a dental hygienist when I do school presentations. Children love to ask about the writing process and what I do when I get stuck when writing a story. It is an excellent feeling.

Q. Are you working on anything at the present that you would like to share with your readers about?

Katie: I am currently in the process of releasing a Roxy Plush to go along with the books and the second book in the Paw Elementary series will be out this fall!

Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Katie: I hope that I can provide a safe world for children to experience different things in life that might seem scary or create anxiety and help them work through those feelings with my books. I hope they can find a friend in Roxy.

Q. What real-life inspirations did you draw from for the world building within your book?

Katie: The experiences, I write about come from things that I have gone through myself or witnessed children go through. Whether it is from a professional standpoint or being an aunt/ I, try to take those moments and implement them into my books.
