Little Narwhal’s Day: A Secret Creatures Book

Little Narwhal is out to explore the day with his best friend, Little Beluga. Together the two friends meet amazing creatures from their home in the Arctic Ocean.

Little Narwhal’s Day: A Secret Creatures Book by Angela Castillo is a very delightful book about Little Narwhal and his friend Beluga as they explore the beautiful Arctic Ocean. Throughout the book, Little Narwhal and Beluga come across many of their sea creature friends including Arctic Terns, Arctic Char, and Arctic Fox Kits.
This book by Angela Castillo offers numerous learning opportunities for young readers and doesn’t lose the reader in doing so. Throughout the book, young readers are introduced to various sea creatures that are unique and interesting, and at the end of the book, the author includes fun facts about all of these unusual sea animals. Not only did my children have fun reading the book and learning new facts about animals they have never heard of, but I also appreciated the educational aspect of the book. I’ll take fun and educational any day!
Angela Castillo is very creative and descriptive in her writing throughout the book. Her choice of words alongside artistic illustrations help the book come alive. I don’t think I’ve seen drawings quite like this before! They are truly magical and bring an “Arctic feel” to the reader throughout the book.

About the Author, Angela Castillo

“Angela has been writing stories since she created her first book with a green crayon at the age of eight. She’s lived all over Central Texas, but mostly hovered in and around the small town of Bastrop Texas, which she loves with unnatural fierceness and features in many of her books. Angela has four wild children, a husband who studies astrophysics for fun, and a cat.”

Rapid Fire with Angela Castillo

Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Angela: When I was eight years old, I wrote my first several-page story in green crayon. I never stopped after that.

Q. What does your family think of your writing?

Angela: When I received the proofs in the mail for Little Narwhal’s Day, two of my children got teary-eyed and said, “Mom, we’re so proud of you!” Best moment as an author, ever.

Q. What advice do you have for writers?

Angela: Figure out what you want and go for it. If your goal is to share your art, then do so. If you want to support your family, you need to really study the craft of marketing as well as writing. Figuring out your intention is the first step.

Q. Describe what your ideal writing space looks like?

Angela: Somewhere outside, maybe under a tree on a spring day with birds singing in the background.

Q. What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Angela: I love taking my kids to explore local parks. We are blessed to have several really nice ones close by. I also enjoy hitting up thrift stores. And reading, of course.

Q. How did you become involved in the subject of your book?

Angela: I’ve loved narwhals forever, and my grandma used to get me subscriptions to all the kid’s magazines like Ranger Rick when I was a kid. So I thought it would be fun to write books about animals most people have never heard of. Like ribbon seals. Have you ever heard of a ribbon seal?

Q. What types of books do you write?

Angela: All kinds! I have Christian historical fiction, Christian contemporary, books for middle-grade kids, and a series for busy moms who want to write books. Little Narwhal’s Day is my first picture book.

Q. Tell us about your plans for the future. Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Angela: I hope to have more picture books under my belt since I really love writing and producing them. Having a wonderful artist bring my words to life is a fantastic thing. I also plan to start doing author days at local schools, hoping to inspire kids to write their own books.

Q. What do you love most about being an author?

Angela: I love creating whatever world I want and presenting it to other people to enjoy. Especially kids, because if they tell you they like something you know it’s true. Kids are brutally honest!

Q. Is there a message in your book you hope readers will grasp?

Angela: I hope kids will realize there are creatures in this world waiting to be discovered, and that they will be inspired to find out more about them on their own.
