Children’s Book Review: Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland

Time for another ADVENTURE with Lucky!

What could be more fun than snow days with friends?

Lucky and her doggie friends enjoy a winter wonderland adventure filled with snowshoeing, skating, skiing and sledding. Inspired by the lucky life she now has, Lucky brings her pals on a surprise visit t a rescue shelter!

Through it all, Lucky and her friends realize that making new friends and giving back is the most wonderful adventure they can share.

Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland by Elizabeth Macy is one of those stories that will pull at your heartstrings and make you feel all cozy and warm. I guess it is kind of fitting since this book is all about Lucky’s Adventure in a winter wonderland! If you and your loved ones are suckers like me for animals, acts of kindness and family and friends, then this book is for you.

This book is about a rescue dog named Lucky and her doggy friends who go on adventures in a winter wonderland. During these adventures, they learn all about giving back, making new friends, and being grateful for life’s blessings. This book by Elizabeth Macy will also educate even the youngest readers about shelter animals and second chances.

Many children, including my own, have, at one time or another, asked their parents to let them go into a pet store to look at the puppies. Often we see the cute little puppies at the puppy store, and we forget that six to eight million dogs are waiting to be adopted from animal shelters. Lucky’s Adventure in Winter Wonderland by Elizabeth Macy is one of those books that can help children learn to adopt instead of shop and how to give back.

As a parent, I need to introduce my children to the concept of shelter dogs, and the tough things that they go through, and this book is perfect for doing that.

Lucky and her doggy friends will wiggle their way into your heart and onto your bookshelf. This is a book that your kids will be asking to read over and over again.

Rapid Fire with Elizabeth Macy

Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?

Elizabeth: It never crossed my mind about writing a book. But when my dog Lucky was lost for four days- it was such a great story- from the support from my community to her guardian angels and how she was found- I just had to share this magical story and I knew it would make the perfect picture book.

Q. What does your family think of your writing?

Elizabeth: My family is very supportive. My boyfriend loves helping me brainstorm ideas- especially the illustrations.

Q. Describe what your ideal writing space looks like?

Elizabeth: Sitting in a quiet place, with my dog, Lucky on the lap and a notebook.

Q. How did you become involved in the subject or theme of your book?

Elizabeth: In the Winter book, 2nd in the series, I wanted Lucky and her friends to have a fun adventure outdoors- we both love outdoor activities. I also wanted to continue our theme of friendship, kindness, and gratitude. And it was important for me to help bring greater awareness about rescue pets. My dog and cat are rescues, and I am passionate about helping rescues.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Elizabeth: I also have a photography business. I enjoy traveling and going on adventures with Lucky.

Q. What do you love most about being an Author?

Elizabeth: I love doing school visits and readings. I love to see how excited kids are when they hear Lucky’s stories and meet the star of the book.

Q. Can you tell us about one of the most rewarding moments you have had as an author?

Elizabeth: I recently visited a school that specializes in learning disabilities and autism. The kids loved Lucky’s story. They even created their books to show me, as well as a trailer and sang me a song about Lucky! (Tune of Take me home by John Denver. Take me home to my mama, where I belong….) I was tearing up!

Q. Are you working on anything at the present that you would like to share with your readers about?

Elizabeth: We just went camping and started Lucky’s next book in the series- a camping Adventure!

Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Elizabeth: The themes in my books are about friendship, love, hope, kindness, and gratitude. The winter book introduces kids to rescues, and I hope more families consider adopting instead of purchasing their pets. There are so many dogs that desperately need to find their forever homes.

Q. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?

Elizabeth: Lucky is out and about in our community a lot. She goes with me wherever she can and to all events, book signings, school visits. I love when kids recognize her on the street and tell us how much they love Lucky and her story. I’ve been told many read it over and over each night.

  1. Greetings! I’ve been following your blog for a long time now and finally got the courage to go ahead and give you
a shout out from Houston Texas! Just wanted to mention keep up the excellent work!

  2. Thank you for sharing this, my daughter loves to read and I am looking for more books for her to read as she will be phasing out of our state program of getting one free book per month when she turns 5 in a few months. I’m adding her in my Goodreads to look her up and possibly purchase some of her books.

  3. Aww, what a sweet-sounding story/series! We would totally get a shelter pet if not for all our allergies lol – our girls keep begging for a cat or dog, but my husband refuses to get shots 🙁

  4. Okay this is adorable. I love when my kiddo reads stories that are based on real characters and great practices like pet adoption (Lucky is so cute!). And a great book about kindness and Friendship – so much better to read examples of it, instead of just teaching it without the visuals. Also love that Lucky goes to all the book signings! What a real star 🙂

  5. My son would love this book. He loves anything with animals and dog books are his favorite. I love that it’s about rescue dogs. All of our pets have been rescues include two dogs. We love rescuing our furry friends.

  6. Thank you for sharing your honest review. It’s definitely a great book and I would love to get a copy for my kids. They could really learn a lot from this as I am teaching them to more caring to animals.
