There is a quote by Sonya Parker that I remind myself and my kids of regularly, “Stop comparing yourself to other people you’re supposed to be unique.”

As the mommy of three beautiful children, it’s a quote that speaks to me. All of our kids are amazingly unique, and this is something we love to celebrate with them. By helping our children accept and embrace the traits that make them special, we not only heighten their confidence, but we can also guide them to accept and appreciate the differences they see in others.

A great children’s unicorn book series that is not only inspiring but helps celebrate kindness and being unique is Unicorn Jazz Eye See You: Choosing kindness by award-winning author Lisa Caprelli. This wonderful book is part of a trilogy that stars a musical unicorn that has purple hair, shiny hooves, and a beautiful voice. Alongside her awesome friend, Woof the Crow, Unicorn Jazz, and her friends encourage each other to be themselves and to proud of their uniqueness.

In book three of the Unicorn Jazz series, Woof the Crow shares a story with Jazz about his first pair of eyeglasses and how he struggled to be accepted by his peers because of his different look. He also shares with Jazz how he first noticed Jazz and her beautiful singing talent thanks to his new awesome glasses. The same glasses that he felt uncomfortable with at first ended up being a beautiful blessing and was what began his friendship with Jazz.

The books in the Unicorn Jazz series are great for encouraging discussion with your kids about the qualities and abilities that make each one of them different. Being proud of their talents, interests, personalities, and physical appearances, as well as feeling confident no matter the situation, is a wonderful thing to teach.

This story is very relatable to children because what kid doesn’t go through a time when they feel different and long to be accepted? Teaching our kids that their differences are what make them unique and special can be a difficult message to teach your kids when others, especially friends, are telling them otherwise.

Reading stories about characters who are different and unique from others, but find success and happiness anyways, can help. Unicorn Jazz Eye See You: Choosing Kindness shows kids why it’s okay to be different and to let their uniqueness shine. I hope that this book is as useful as it was to my kids in helping them be themselves, be unique and how great of a thing it actually can be.

It is also important to note that illustrator, Davey Villalobos continues to do a phenomenal job creating a magical story with his hand-drawn and charming illustrations. The text and illustrations in the book work in harmony to capture the mind and imagination of children. I love that this book features a comic book style illustration style and features kid like hand-drawn art that resonates with my children.
