The space is there for whatever your heart desires.

My husband and I work hard to instill an “attitude of gratitude” in our kids. Every night before we go to bed, my family and I say our prayers. Every prayer starts with, “Thank you, God, for …”. We always encourage our kids to be thankful for all the wonderful things they have and are blessed with. Sometimes, my kids are grateful things like their toys, their stuffed animals, and their friends, but I always want to remind them also to be thankful for the things that matter, their family, friends, and love.

As parents, it is essential to encourage our children to be thankful because it is all too easy to get caught up in the negatives of our lives and allow them to define us. When my kids are having a particularly hard day, I also encourage them to find things that they are thankful for and recite or write them down. However, I do believe that the daily practice of showing gratitude and not just when they are having a bad day, or praying is critical in helping my children become happier. That is why I love gratitude journals.

The Thankful Mermaid Series: The Coloring Book/Gratitude Journal by Hayley Rose is perfect for helping your children build self-esteem, promote positivity, and inspire creativity, all while practicing gratitude. The daily practice of gratitude journaling has helped my kids become happier throughout their lives, and this very simple fun and creative practice have to lead to an increase in gratefulness.
The beautiful two-page spreads in The Thankful Mermaid series features daily gratitude prompts, inspirational quotes, and whimsical mermaid coloring pages with additional space for journaling, doodling or coloring. Talk about a girl’s dream come true!

The Thankful Mermaid by Hayley Rose helps my kids learn how to practice gratitude on their own. This journal will help children focus on recognizing people and things that they are thankful for. Expressing gratitude is also great for relationships. If children can focus on the positive things about a person, including themselves, and acknowledge kindness, it can enrich relationships with that person and/or themselves.

The Thankful Mermaid is also great for encouraging genuine writing opportunities that also help children academically with handwriting, spelling, and sentence composition. The Thankful Mermaid Series can also help kids become aware of the great and wonderful things occurring around them. The practice of gratitude can become a habit that will hopefully accompany them throughout their lifetime.

One of my favorite features of The Thankful Mermaid series by Hayley Rose is that every other page has motivational, inspiring, and thoughtful quotes. Author, Hayley Rose picked several quotes to feature in her book that I thought were the most beautiful inspirational quotes all kids should hear. If this world needs something, it’s more kindness. Instilling positive messages in your kids can go a long way in improving their self-confidence and ability to enhance their empathy towards others. Words are powerful, and even the tiniest of sayings can go a long way, and don’t be surprised if you notice yourself feeling inspired, too! I know I was.

Rapid Fire with Hayley Rose

Q. What does your family think of your writing?

Hayley: My family has always been super supportive when it comes to my writing. They are the first to read everything and show up to many of my events. It really means a lot to me.

Q. What was the most surprising thing you learned about creating books?

Hayley: That it’s a lot of work! It’s not just you and your thoughts as you put pen to paper… It takes a village! For picture books, you need an illustrator, a copy editor, and/or a content editor, a book formatter, and printer/publisher.

If you’re publishing independently, you need to know all the publishing formats — Ebook, paperback, hardcover, lay-flat, smyth sewn, perfect, etc. There’s a lot to learn in this business.

Q. What do you think makes a good story?

Hayley: This is a tough question. Stories are like art…in the eye of the beholder. I believe, write what you love…then rewire… Have a network of author friends to bounce ideas off. Gather a group of beta readers in your genre. Hire a great copy editor and content editor. The happier you are with your story, the longer your story will make you happy.

Q. What advice do you have for writers?

Hayley: Keep writing. Write every day. Write about what you know or what you are passionate about. Above all, …enjoy the journey.

Q. Describe what your ideal writing space looks like?

Hayley: I love to write while on my sofa with the dog beside me and the Hallmark channel playing in the background. It’s my happy place. Please note that a happy place is subject to change if offered a chateau in France.

Q. What inspires you as a writer?

Hayley: I find inspiration in the people around me or my life experiences. My Fifo the Bear series is based on my godson, who is autistic. It’s a series of prompts and spreads instead of a storyline as kids with autism don’t always have the attention span for a story.

My Thankful Series came from the loss of my parents and a need for me to get over my grief and rewire my brain with gratitude and self-esteem prompts, and coloring to ease the fear, calm the anxiety and redirect the sadness.

Q. What do you like to do when you are not writing?

Hayley: I love to travel and explore new places, catch up with friends over dinner, or sit on the couch and watch a good movie.

Q. What type of books do you write?

Hayley: I write educational, interactive picture books, self-help books, and YA fantasy fiction.

Q. What do you love most about being an Author?

Hayley: I love the creativity process. When you get that spark and run with it… and then watching your baby grow.

Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?

Hayley: These books are designed to calm, de-stress, reflect, set goals, build confidence, strengthen relationships, and more. My hope is that they help to make you a happier, more self-confident, and more productive person.
