Our Stay at The Edgewater

This month, my family and I had the chance to stay at The Edgewater, Madison, Wisconsin, for the weekend, a small getaway that we desperately needed. From crazy work hours to limited family time, to all of the other stresses of military life, we needed to get out of town.

Luckily, The Edgewater is only 2 hours away from the biggest Naval base in Illinois, Great Lakes. Nothing is better than a small getaway where you can spend one-on-one time with your family. It is a great way to deepen your bond with one another and create long-lasting memories, and The Edgewater, Madison, Wisconsin, was exactly what the doctor ordered.

"The Edgewater is committed to the community and provides an ongoing roster of free, year round public events from outdoor concerts on the plaza to iceskating. "Opening the waterfront to the public is a top priority for The Edgewater, and watching guests and local residents take part in activities like kite flying and fat tire bike races is extremely rewarding."

Frozen Assets Festival

During our stay at The Edgewater, we had the chance to experience something we had never experienced before, a festival on the ice! The Frozen Assets Festival is a free family-friendly event held at The Edgewater and on frozen Lake Mendota. For six years, Clean Lakes Alliance, a non-profit that’s goal is to support the lakes, along with partners and sponsors, have been welcoming families to join the fun. The festival goes a week-long during the winter months, making it one of the best things to do in Madison, Wisconsin, in winter.

This event brings in more than 10,000 attendees and raised more than $130,000 in 2020 for the lakes to support Madison’s lakes. Since 2012, Frozen Assets has raised a whopping $1,200,000 for lake improvement projects, educational programs, and water quality monitoring.

We were so excited to not only support but participate in such an amazing festival that has such a great mission, to support Madison’s greatest assets, the lakes. The Frozen Assets Festival has activities for all age groups. From ice skating and pond hockey to sleigh rides and kite flying and a very unique and fun 5k run on the ice, this festival was the perfect event for the community of Madison as well as visitors like us. I think one of my all-time favorite parts of the festival was seeing the skydiving ice jumps with Seven Hills Skydiving while drinking hot chocolate because who doesn’t like a good show while sipping something warm!

The Statehouse – Some meals aren’t easily forgotten. The Statehouse culinary team at The Edgewater are masters in their craft, carefully creating menus and dishes that not only taste great but are inspired by many local, artisan producers. Our dinner at The Statehouse was nothing short of extraordinary. They have raised our standards in terms of the food quality, the restaurant’s outstanding location with the incredible views of Lake Mendota, and the service.

Augie’s Tavern – Augie’s Tavern is named after Augie Faulkner, the first general manager and an owner of The Edgewater Hotel for nearly 50 years. Today, his legacy is celebrated at Augie’s Tavern. You can grab a local craft beer or a signature cocktail and enjoy some of this restaurant’s locally sourced Artisan Charcuterie, Steak Salad, and Buttermilk Fried Chicken.

The Boathouse – The Boathouse is a casual waterfront dining option at The Edgewater. The Boathouse chef takes casual classics and puts his Modern Midwestern spin on them. The Boathouse serves authentic Wisconsin favorites like a Chicken BLT on Stella’s Spicy Cheese Bread, Lobster Rolls, and Blue Cheese Burgers, all while with the beautiful Lake Mendota view right in front of you. Did I mention that you can arrive by boat and tie up on the Pier directly in front of The Boathouse?!

The Icehouse – The Icehouse has grab-and-go options like pizza, snacks, and a variety of Wisconsin-brewed beers for those enjoying all The Plaza has to offer. This was probably one of my daughter’s favorite places to eat because who doesn’t love pizza?!
