The Grouchy Mom Book Review
FINALLY, a book that answers the question, “Why is mom in a bad mood?”
A little girl is having a very grouchy day…. BUT, that’s not how she sees it! From not being willing to try even ONE bite of her breakfast, to complaining about getting dressed and putting on shoes, this story is *almost* too relatable to enjoy!

The Grouchy Mom by Rebecca Ventre is a book about a little girl who is having a very grouchy day… although that is not how she sees it! She thinks her Mom is the one having a grouchy day! The story is very cleverly told from the young girl’s perspective. The girl just can’t understand why her Mom could be so grouchy when she is the one all the bad things are happening to. From complaining about her shirt tag to complaining about not being able to eat her eggs because the syrup touched them; this story is all too relatable to kids.
At bedtime, the girl demonstrates compassion towards her Mom and realizes that her Mom might just be tired. The Grouchy Mom is very relatable, witty, and entertaining. This children’s story has a great underlined message for kids and great teachable moments.
When I read this book with my children, I was able to expand on the text and use the book to talk to my children about why the little girl thought Mom was grouchy and how the little girl could have handled it.
Darya Shchegoleva did a magnificent job illustrating the book. The illustrations are engaging, relatable, and funny, and they will keep your children entertained and smiling. This picture book is a wonderful story that you will not be able to put down. The Grouchy Mom by Rebecca Ventre has made its way to the favorites section on our bookshelf, and I can’t wait to reread this book with my littles.

About the Author, Becca Ventre
“Hello! My name is Rebecca Ventre! I am from Lafayette, Louisiana, and I love living in Acadiana. I love food, music, and being outside. I love to laugh… but who doesn’t?! Most of all, I LOVE Jesus and my family! I am a mom to four wild and wonderful kids who keep me walking the line between crazy and fun! I have always loved writing poems and stories, and I am thankful for my amazing parents that encouraged me in countless ways.
I am registered nurse, and enjoyed working for 10 years with wonderful people caring for unforgettable patients. I am currently staying at home with little ones who give me loads of love and inspiration! I love children’s books! My favorite author as a child was Shel Silverstine, and there are too many others to list!
One day I decided to tackle my dream of publishing children’s books, and it has been so much fun! My kids are included in the stories and design of the books. Some of their art work and favorite toys are displayed. The amazing illustrator had many candid photos of our family to capture our facial expressions and world in a fun way! The grouchy mom was originally an idea by my 2nd daughter, who after a LONG day and several bedtime stories giggled and said, “There should be a book called the grouchy mom!” So…. now there is!
I really hope you and your children enjoy these stories as much as we do! My goal is to give parents and children a moment away from reality, where they can sit together sharing a laugh or making their imagination run wild!”
Rapid Fire with Becca Ventre
Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Becca: As a child, I loved writing, and I LOVE reading children’s books to my kids! My kids are always giving me great material. One evening, at the end of a LONG day, one of my daughters said, “There should be a book called The Grouchy Mom.” I said, “There will be!” Haha! That’s where my publishing journey began.
Q. What does your family think of your writing?
Becca: My kids love hearing my stories and encourage me to keep writing. Most of my stories, I will likely never publish, but it doesn’t make it any less fun to write and read them at bedtime!
Q. What was the most surprising thing you learned about creating books?
Becca: I didn’t know that it would be so addicting and that finishing one book would just make me ready to start the next. I also didn’t realize how long it would take, and that it is more of a challenge than I ever thought it would be. I am often thankful I went into that blindly; otherwise, I think I would have put it off for many years!
Q. What do you think makes a good story?
Becca: For my stories, the goal is to make the mom and the child laugh (and usually for different reasons). The view of the story completely depends on the perspective of the reader! I want both to enjoy it! I also try to create things that are fun to read over and over again.
Q. What advice do you have for writers?
Becca: I would encourage you to go for it! Write even if it’s for fun and just for you and your family to read. And if you want your book published, there are many resources to help you. Don’t get discouraged if it looks like it’s too much to take on. One step at a time!
Q. What do you love most about the writing process?
Becca: My favorite part is reading it to my children to see if they smile and light up!
Q. Can you tell us about one of the most rewarding moments you have had as an author?
Becca: When a mom says she and her child BOTH love the book, that makes me SO happy. My main goal is to create a special moment between moms and their children, where they are smiling or laughing together. When someone tells me they had that moment, I am so excited!
Q. Are you working on anything at the present that you would like to share with your readers about?
Becca: I have a few fun projects on the way, but this specific series, featuring my family, is complete for now. The other books that include my children are My Sneaky Parents and Mom University, my personal favorite
