Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Oscar: I discovered my passion for writing while employed as a supply chain manager for Walmart. At the end of 2018, I had an epiphany. I wanted to write an impactful story that was applicable to everyday life- something that taught children values and morals. Soon I began writing and found an illustrator to execute my vision.
The book promotes kindness, respect, well-manners, and positivity in children. My purpose was to encourage children to put away their misbehavior in exchange for a positive attitude. I strongly believe our experiences and beliefs shape us, determining what type of people we attract and repel away. Ultimately, I would like to create a series of children’s books aimed at encouraging positive, life-enhancing conversations between parents and children through fictional characters.
Q. What does your family think of your writing?
Oscar: My family thinks my writing is cool! They marvel at how far I have come from the initial stages of the book to now. I wish for Albert the Albatross to become a household name and beacon of hope for positivity among families. I truly hope my writing brings families closer together during these times of uncertainty and pressure.
Q. What advice do you have for writers?
Oscar: Self-doubt can be the kryptonite to an author’s success. The first step is believing in yourself and avoid self-limiting thoughts. If being an independent, self-publishing author was easy, more people would try it. You must desire the achievement of success, like the air you breathe. Plan to remove negative thinkers from your life; the people you surround yourself with can influence your attitude.
Additionally, your internal dialogue can eventually manifest outwardly. Get started writing that award-winning novel or picture book and do not give up. I always say, “Why put off something for tomorrow that you can start today?”
Q. What inspires you as a writer?
Oscar: I find my inspiration in my family. It motivates me to create material that will live on, something my future children can apply to their lives. I want to create a legacy for them! Books serve as a snapshot into an author’s mind, and I would love for them to understand my mindset and passion during this time.
Q. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Oscar: I love to spend time with my wife and visiting with family. I am an avid Bible-reader, and I enjoy exercising and listening to audiobooks.
Q. What does your creative process look like?
Oscar: The creative process can stem from a simple conversation I overhear in a grocery store or something significant that occurs in my day that makes me say, “Hmm…I should turn this into a book.” From there, I begin the creative process of building the book.
Q. What do you love most about being an Author?
Oscar: I love the overwhelming support from fans and followers of the Albatross brand. I enjoy hearing from fans about how the book has impacted them and their children’s lives. It makes me proud! I get a rush of excitement when I see book reviews. It is humbling to know that my book impacted someone to the point where they felt compelled to write about it. It has been fulfilling seeing how this message has resonated within people’s hearts across the world.
Q. Are you working on anything at the present that you would like to share with your readers about?
Oscar: Of course! I am working on the second book called Albert the Albatross: Unlearning to understand. It is the story that addresses racial inequality and cultural diversity. In this book, we explore the childhood of Albert the Albatross and how, as an Albatross, he was taught to discriminate against other kinds of birds. Though unpleasant in certain moments, this story speaks of a relatable truth that exists within our society, and thus shines light on how racism is perpetuated.
However, as an adult, Albert discovers how to end this divisive cycle that causes inequality by simply choosing to unlearn the lessons—which some may mistake for wisdom—he was taught as a kid. When this book is available, I hope you take this journey with Albert as he travels the world learning and unlearning about other birds so that he can change the world not just for himself but for his children.
Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?
Oscar: I hope that readers leave with the concept that attitude matters. How a person perceives the world, whether positively or negatively, and their response to challenges determines their future. A positive attitude will always out-weigh any skill set you can learn in life. A positive attitude maximizes the talent you possess and compensates for the ones you do not. I believe un-coachable child grows up to be an unemployable adult if their attitude is not nurtured.
The purpose of the book is to give young readers insight into the power of a positive attitude, the values of integrity and respect, and how that translates into “winning” in the game of life. How important is attitude to you?
Q. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
Oscar: I hear from readers via my social media pages as well as through Amazon book reviews… I had one reader comment: “This book is amazing!! I originally purchased 4 books and I loved them so much I purchased 5 more!! Beautiful message for young and old!! Keeping one and the rest will go all over the country for gifts!!!
