Q. When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer?
Karen: As a young girl, I was often found with my legs tucked under me, head bend, pen in hand, writing in my journal. I had so much I wanted to say. Some would even go as far as to say I was opinionated. My journals were my outlet. I can be my authentic self without fear or judgment. I felt empowered.
During my youth, I felt as if no one was interested in my point of view. Journaling gave me freedom of expression. During my teenage years, I dabbled in poetry. I also fell in love with the theatre. I dreamed of becoming an actress. What I loved most was the scripts and the writing.
I am still actively writing in my journal today, but not as often. Through my daily journaling, I had a light bulb moment a few years ago. It was a long time coming, but I knew that being a writer was not only the right decision but has always been my passion.
Q. What does your family think of your writing?
Karen: My family has been my number 1 supporter. They supported me even during my early doodling days. They support all of my endeavors. Cam’s Sneakers will always hold a special place in my family’s hearts.
Q. What do you think makes a good story?
Karen: When a story has a great plot, well-developed characters and written from the heart. They make the best stories.
Q. What advice do you have for writers?
Karen: My advice to other writers is to stay true to yourself. Tackle your passions with grace, not fear. Write about things that truly strike a chord within you.
Q. What inspires you as a writer?
Karen: I work with children with special needs. Being around children is all the inspiration I need to fuel my creativity. I am so thankful to be surrounded by fun, laughter, imagination, bravery, and love.
Q. What do you like to do when you are not writing?
Karen: When I am not writing, you can find me out on trails for my 10km daily walk. Being in nature grounds me. I feel alive, calm, peaceful, and happy.
Q. What does your creative process look like?
Karen: I love the freedom I have as a self- published author. I would get an idea and quickly write it on my tablet. The ideas would come while I am eating, out and about, just about anytime or anywhere. Sometimes the ideas would flow out all at once and other times a lot longer. I am a bit of a perfectionist so, I rework a manuscript many times before the editing process.
Q. Can you tell us about one of the most rewarding moments you have had as an author?
Karen: Having parents send me pictures of their children holding my book with the brightest of smiles after reading Cam’s Sneakers has not only been rewarding but humbling as well.
Q. What do you hope your readers take away from this book?
Karen: I hope readers understand the importance of comfort items in children’s lives. Secondly, how important self-regulation is, especially when children leave the safety of their parents. When children are scared, confused, or hurt.
Q. Do you hear from your readers much? What kinds of things do they say?
Karen: Many families and little readers have reached out to me and offered to send me postcards or emails to let me know how much they enjoyed the book. Others have reached out to me on my social media page to let me know that their children asked to read Cam’s Sneakers more than ten times in a day

LuQman: I grew up in Pakistan. I was eager to draw and colour from a very young age. I used magazine articles and cartoons from books as my muse. My mom would often be upset that I was wasting time in useless doodling instead of my studies. I loved drawing pictures of animals and caricatures for family and friends. As a young boy, I was asked by one of my teachers to draw for a project. He announced to the class that I was an artist. I think at that moment I knew that art and design was going to be my career in the future.
