A Reindeer’s Christmas by Tamsin Wood Children’s Book Review
It’s Christmas Eve and Santa is in a bit of a pickle. His usual mode of transport is useless due to heavy snow and he has no idea how he will deliver all the presents in time. That is, until a young boy offers to help, by lending him his herd of magical reindeer.
Kids love origin stories; mine always ask, “but where did the first one come from?” This playful story suggests that a very special kid – Shaun – was actually the reason why Santa uses magical reindeer to deliver his toys. In A Reindeer’s Christmas, we learn about the generosity that sparked a miracle. This book is a lovely way to encourage the spirit of giving in kids, and helps them understand that even though they are small, they can have a big impact! During a time when kids are often getting lots of presents and find themselves the center of the festivities, it’s a great reminder that Christmas is about a focus on meeting the needs of others.
At the beginning of the story, Santa has been attempting to travel on his bike, but quickly realizes that the ice and snow are slooooowing him down. He happens upon a farm and meets friendly Shaun, who introduces him to his reindeer crew. Santa meets all the familiar faces for the first time – including Dasher, Dancer, and even Rudolph! Shaun drops some hints that the reindeer eat a special food, but it isn’t until Santa borrows the reindeer for his deliveries that he realizes they can FLY! And – double surprise – they can also talk!
Accompanied by softly drawn pictures that bring the bubble-eyed characters to life, this story is a Christmas tradition in the making. Kids can recognize themselves in Shaun, who has the power to help Santa deliver gifts to all the children in the world just by sharing what he has. We all can use the reminder that the season is more about giving than getting, and this story does just that. It’s a great way to be surprised by a new story with familiar characters. A Reindeer’s Christmas is a great addition to the holiday bookshelf – reading a Christmas story each night is a great way to celebrate during the whole month of December!
