Burgerhead and Mean Jerry Visit the Farm Book Review
Burgerhead and Mean Jerry Visit the Farm is the second in Dan Madson’s best-selling series about two lovable and memorable friends.
One day Burgerhead invites Mean Jerry to help out on his uncle’s farm. The boys are given one job to do: gather all the eggs from the chicken coop, then close and latch the gate. Sometimes, Mean Jerry forgets to listen to instructions. When the boys hear Uncle Everett yelling, “The chickens are out! The chickens are out!” the fun begins.

Burgerhead and Mean Jerry are back again, and this time they visit a farm and learn some brand new lessons. This installment in the series doesn’t disappoint; the characters, problems, and solutions have a unique perspective that kids and their grown ups will appreciate. It’s easy to assume you know why people act the way they do, and Burgerhead and Mean Jerry help teach kids to look beyond the obvious and extend compassion and grace to their friends.
In the last volume, we got to see how Burgerhead and Mean Jerry forged a friendship, despite being from very different backgrounds. In this book, Burgerhead introduces Mean Jerry to his uncle Everett, the farmer. From the moment Mean Jerry meets him, readers see the model of a supportive, welcoming adult. When Mean Jerry seems uncertain, Uncle Everett teaches him how to introduce himself, with a handshake and a look in the eye.
We can see Mean Jerry learning confidence, as he explains that his name is just that – a nickname – and not a description of his character. There isn’t a lot of commentary; Burgerhead and his uncle simply accept Mean Jerry as he is, nickname and all, and welcome him to the farm.
Even when Mean Jerry does make a big mistake, and the chickens escape, kids can see that there’s a way back. The boys are able to corral all the missing chickens, and Uncle Everett isn’t angry. He lets the boys experience the error, and helps them fix it themselves. What a lesson for kids and grownups alike! We will definitely make mistakes, but with some courage and a loving grownup, we can repair them. Perfect for little ones and young readers alike, it’s a great way to start conversations about listening to wise advice and repairing relationships when we make poor choices.
