The Cherry Larrys vs The Poison Berry by Crystal Bussell Book Review
In The Cherry Larrys vs Poison Berry by Crystal Bussell, Life as they know it, has been turned upside down! With betrayal, rotten scientists, explosions, and evil lurking, it seems all hope is lost! That is, until Jerry and Barry, two ordinary brothers, set out to make an extraordinary change.
Ready for an adventure?! Tired of the same old plot? The Cherry Larrys vs. The Poison Berries by Crystal Bussell looks like a sweet story at first…but it quickly takes a turn for the dramatic! In this exciting tale, the fruity heroes discover the superhero that lurks within. This book is great for young readers who are craving something a little more spicy! Written with a nod to graphic novel style, this volume is a great introduction to the serial adventure genre.
When we first meet Jerry and Barry, they seem to be just like any other young berries, in a land full of the “greenest greens you’ve ever seen.” They’re part of a loving family of fruits and vegetables in the town of Far Away. They’re even learning from their mentor, Dr. Rechet, an honorable scientist. However, their world gets turned upside down when Dr. Rechet reveals himself to be an evil madman with a plot to steal fame, power, and the town jewels.
Jerry and Barry are able to thwart him, but in the process, gain superpowers from the toxic explosion of the doctor’s lab! With the help of their newfound abilities, they’re able to defend the town and its inhabitants from the further exploits of Dr. Rechet and his evil crew. Will they prevail? The story ends on a cliffhanger, getting readers excited for the next installment of the series!
Stories of superheroes and villains can seem highly imaginative, but it’s a great way for kids to view themselves and their struggles in a positive, and even exciting, light. No matter what their circumstances, kids can point to things that feel hard. Reading about characters who triumph over difficulties is always a great way to encourage independence and resilience. We all could use some of those traits as grown-ups too!
