Join Astoria as she learns how to swim, and see how she overcomes her fears in this adorable and educational children’s book.
When you’re a kid, life can be full of excitement, but it can also be scary! There are so many new things to learn and experience, and they often can be difficult. Whether it’s starting school, learning to read, or riding a bike, kids face challenges all the time. Paw Elementary Astoria Learns to Swim by Katie Melko lets little readers come along on one such journey – conquering the water!
We first meet Astoria and her brother, Jax, when they get an exciting invitation; their friends are hosting a pool party. It sounds amazing, except that Astoria and Jax don’t know how to swim! It’s ok, since their mom enrolls them in swimming lessons right away. Throughout the rest of the book, readers get to peek inside the process of swim lessons and learn exactly what to expect. The instructors at Aqua Pups are friendly and patient, and they never rush their small students. Swimming can be fun! By the end of the story, Astoria and Jax are swimming like pros at the pool party.
The characters are cats and dogs, which adds to the fun; particularly since Astoria and Jax are cats, not typically known for their love of water! The illustrations are soft and colorful, with inviting brush strokes. Even the water looks warm! Before the start of her first lesson, Astoria worries if she’ll be able to swim, and if she’ll be able to get out of the pool. The water seems really big!
Astoria’s teacher, Dakota, takes her hand, and they go into the water together. The author does a great job showing exactly how kids learn to swim, and how a kind instructor can make the process safe and not scary. This is a great title to give to youngsters trying swimming for the first time, or just taking on a new challenge! This book is part of Melko’s series: “Paw Elementary.” Through the series, Melko helps kids face other new experiences, like visiting the dentist. Be sure to check these out as well!
