When you’re a kid, moving away from everything you know and love can be your greatest challenge yet. In Moving Teddy’s Journey, by Zara Johnston, readers come along with little Teddy as he finds his way in a new city and a new school. As a military wife herself, Zara Johnston is able to portray this uniquely difficult process in a hopeful and inspiring light.

Teddy’s family is moving! As we get to know Teddy and his parents, we learn that his dad is in the army, which means they move to new places often. At first, Teddy is upset and sad, and wonders if “Mum and Dad understand everything that he’d be missing.” He thinks about the friends he’ll no longer see, the routines that will change, and the new school that he’ll have to navigate. 

Teddy’s mom is understanding, telling him that she knows that he feels sad, but that he’ll soon be able to experience the adventure that comes from exploring a new place to live. She’s right! As soon as Teddy has his first day of school, he begins to meet new friends right away, and sees that this new place might have some good things too. 

The illustrations are full of soft, glowing light, as Teddy and his family try to find the bright side of a difficult situation. Teddy’s parents are drawn with gentle smiles, and you can feel their love and warmth through the pages. In the front of the book is a dedication to military children, who, just like dandelions, can bloom anywhere because of their strength and resilience.

 As a military family, we know firsthand how much love and support can get you through tough situations! A story like this is so dear to my heart as a military wife and mom, and I hope it encourages you as much as it does me!
