Socks Book Review

Socks by Corey Anne Abreau Book Review

This is a children’s book review of Socks by Corey Anne Abreau.

“Sure, I have fun playing with my toys, making noise, and building with blocks. But nothing beats playing with my socks!”

Oh my goodness – I knew I wasn’t the only mom to notice that my kids would choose a random household item instead of a toy any day! Socks, by Corey Anne Abreau, celebrates this special toddler quirk in a sweet rhyming story. It’s so much fun to read with your littles!

If you have ever been around small children, you know that they’re obsessed with the most unexpected things. TV remotes, spatulas, keys – anything but the huge box of toys they’re supposed to play with. Is it because they’re fascinated by the things that we use the most? Probably, but who knows?

In this story, the little hero is absolutely infatuated with socks. He says they are “way more fun than my blocks,” and he invents all kinds of games with all the different styles and colors. He stuffs them in corners; he even pretends they are snacks. The only thing he won’t do with his socks is leave them on his feet!

As a mom with kids that cross a wide age range, I’ve learned that for some things, it’s really important to go with the flow. There are some things that are super important to enforce with my kids due to their health or safety, but for some things, it’s great to let their sense of exploration win the day. This book is a great way to remind parents and caregivers that it’s ok to think outside the box!

Abreau shares on the back cover of the book that her children inspired her to write, and it’s plain to see. Playfulness is so important, and any chance to read a silly, rhyming book together is a big parenting win. Bonus: older siblings will find this story hilarious, since it hits so close to home!  Great read to treasure the funny, early years with your kiddos.
