Gift from God Book Review
All mothers dream of the best for their unborn children, but what happens when life doesn’t go to plan? In GIFT FROM GOD, an expectant mother learns that her child won’t be born as healthy as others, so she must change her plans and outlook on life. Told through the mother’s loving words, and with the help of poignant but straightforward illustrations, GIFT FROM GOD touches on the sensitive subject of raising a child with a disability through one mother’s story of embracing the unexpected and living life with her child to the fullest.
Sometimes a children’s book is written for parents, too. GIFT FROM GOD, by Lori Butierries, is a book like that. In these simple, powerful pages, Lori shares a mother’s story of loving and caring for a child with special needs. The pictures and text are great for kids, but their meaning is powerful and healing for any parent or caregiver, as well.
The story begins with the mother’s hopes and dreams for her child. These dreams are challenged with a medical diagnosis, and the mother feels doubts that she’ll be able to face so many new obstacles. However, with patience, prayer, and a lot of support, the mother re-learns to dream with her child, and discovers how amazing life can be.
Whether you care for a child with a complex medical diagnosis or not, you’ll be able to recognize yourself in this book. As a mother of two special needs children – one with a terminal illness – Lori Butierries gently encourages parents to adjust their outlook and search for all the ways their child is a gift. Even in the simple sentences and pictures, Lori conveys incredible bravery and a willingness to be honest and accept the negative emotions as well as the positive ones.
Lori’s story is incredible, and you’ll enjoy learning more about her and her family at the end of the book. No matter your family’s circumstances, it’s hugely beneficial to understand the challenges that others face, and how they find the means to be grateful and appreciate life in spite of them.
Special needs kids and parents are not to be pitied, and this book is a great reinforcement of that truth. They do experience life differently sometimes, but they still celebrate and find joy in everyday moments. We love reading books like these, since they broaden our understanding of lots of different kinds of kids and families.
